Dyspraxia is said to affect up to ten percent of the population and up to two percent severly. The word dyspraxia comes from the Greek word dys meaning ill or difficult and praxis meaning doing an activity.
Dyspraxia and dyslexia overlap and often both conditions can be seen in the same person

General characteristics of Dyspraxia:
- Can be accident prone and seen as being very clumsy
- Late in reaching important stages of development. For example walking, standing, sitting, rolling over and speaking
- Unable to run, hop, jump or catch or kick a ball as well as other children of similar age
- Difficulty in keeping friends or of how to behave appropriately with other people
- Difficulty walking up and down stairs
- Poor at dressing
- Slow and hesitant in most actions
- Problems learning to swim
- Falls over frequently
- Poor pencil grip and difficult to read handwriting
- Artwork can be very immature
- Often anxious and easily distracted
- Very poor organisational and time management skills
- Directional difficulties and differentiating between left and right
